Truck Repairs You Can Do Yourself (And When to Call A Professional)

April 14, 2020
There are many DIY activities you can do, and these three common DIY truck repair types are just the tip of the iceberg. You’ll need to spend a few hours bending and lying down on the floor and making sure everything is well-oiled and working properly, but you’ll achieve the results and save you a few hundred dollars.

Common Tools for Truck Body Repairs

If you haven’t already, make sure you have the following tools to help you work through each repair:

1. Wrenches - torque and adjustable wrenches
2. Socket and ratchet set
3. Pliers
4. Phillips screwdrivers
5. Jack
6. New car parts for replacements

Truck Repair Activities You Can Do At Home

1. Change Differential Oil
Oil changes are the easiest things to do on your own. You’ll need to check the type and amount of oil you need, locate the oil filter and drain it, tighten the drain plug, change the oil filter and add in the new oil.

It’s a bit of a messy work, so if you don’t want to get yourself in a sticky situation, get in touch with a truck repair group who can do the job for you.

2. Replace Spark Plugs
Spark plugs usually last around 65,000 km but you can easily replace them. Find your spark plugs in your vehicle and remove them using some elbow grease and a handy ratchet. You’ll need to gap in your new plugs before installing it though - this means to adjust the electrodes to make sure they’re not too wide or too narrow. Afterwards, you’re ready to install your new plugs by doing using a torque wrench to make sure the plug is tightened properly.

However, if you’re not comfortable with disassembling your car, you can always call a professional and bring your truck to them.

3. Changing a Cracked Windshield
Windshield repair kits are available on the market that’ll keep cracks from spreading. However, when the damage is too big and you need to have your entire windshield replaced, you can call on a professional truck repair company to do a more detailed job.
